Education & Prevention

Did you know?

  • Over 250,000 children are burned in America each year.
  • National Fire Prevention Association statistics show that 1/3 of the children who die in house fires actually started them.
  • The Consumer Product Safety Commission claims that fire is one of the leading causes of death in the home for young people.
  • Over 700,000 people in the U.S. suffered from burn injuries and over 4,000 Americans died in fires in 2000. That same year over $5.7 billion in property damage occurred due to fires.

As shown by the statistics above this country still ranks high among the developed nations for fire related injury and death. Education and prevention is the key to turning this problem around. St. Florian is dedicated to educating the citizens of Siouxland in fire and burn safety.

St. Florian helped purchased the new Fire Safety House used by the Sioux City Fire Department. St. Florian paid for 2/3rds of the cost of the Fire Safety House, over $20,000, and the Sioux City Fire Departments Fire Prevention and Public Education Department’s budget paid for the remaining 1/3 rd. The Fire Safety House is a mobile teaching aid used to teach third graders in all of Sioux City’s public and private schools how to escape from their home should it catch on fire. St. Florian also purchased the previous Fire Safety House model used by the SCFD from 1995 to 2002, thousands of Sioux City children have learned vital hands-on survival skills in them.

St. Florian has purchased thousands of Fire Safety workbooks for rural NW Iowa school districts. Our dedicated staff has also taught fire and burn safety to thousands of children from NW Iowa.

St. Florian members have attended conferences by the American Burn Association and the World Burn Congress to increase our own ability to serve this community.

St. Florian staff will attend events for the purpose of educating the public in fire and burn prevention. If you have an up coming event and wish us to attend please contact us.

Please give us at least 4 weeks notice.

In Sioux City please contact the Sioux City Fire Department’s Public Education Office at 279-6278.

Fire and Burn Prevention tips:

  • You should have a working smoke detector on every level of your home. Check the batteries every 6 months.
  • Provide yourself and your children at least two escape routes out of the house.
  • Many fires start in the kitchen and the garage, place a working fire extinguisher near the entrances to these locations and know how to use them.
  • Never place a child in bath water that is over 95° F.
  • To prevent burns ensure that your water heater does not dispense water hotter than 100° F.
  • Cook on the back burners of the stove if children are expected in the kitchen.
  • Never leave anything cooking on the stove unattended.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Place matches, lighters, volatile chemicals, cleaning products and gasoline out of reach of children.
  • Teach your children how and when to call 911.
  • Supervise your children around fireworks and camp fires.
  • Use plastic electrical outlet covers when children five years or younger are in the house.
  • Do not use appliances or extension cords that have frayed electrical cords.
  • Never plug in more than one large or two small appliances into one outlet socket.
